What is Surgical Excision?

The excised tissue is then sent to a pathologist for testing, who checks the edges (or margins) of the removed tissue to confirm it is free from cancer. If the margins show signs of cancer, additional tissue may need to be removed in a follow-up procedure.

What to Expect Following Surgical Excision
After the procedure, you may notice mild swelling, redness, and tenderness around the treated area. While this is normal, it’s essential to follow the aftercare instructions provided by our team to ensure proper healing and minimize complications. Here’s what to expect after your surgical excision:
Pain Management
For the first few days, you may experience a mild burning or aching sensation in the treated area. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort.
Wound Care
A bandage will be placed over the excision site to protect the wound and minimize the risk of infection. You will be given detailed instructions on how to keep the area clean and when to change the dressings.
Healing and Follow-up
If stitches are used, they will need to be removed in about one to two weeks. A follow-up appointment will help us monitor your healing progress and ensure there are no signs of infection or complications.
Scarring is a possibility, though proper wound care and diligent sun protection can help minimize the appearance of scars over time. Many ointments or gels may also be recommended to lighten scars as they heal.
